Top 3 Reasons Personal Training is a Waste of Money

Proximity is Not Personalization

Most people assume one-on-one personal training is the gold standard.

More attention...

More money...

Better results...Right?

 Not necessarily.

Here are the top 3 reasons you should NOT hire a one-on-one personal trainer...or fire the one you have:

1. Proximity is NOT Personalization

Paying someone to stand next to you while you work out doesn't mean your program was built for you.

Plenty of one-on-one clients get a generic workout, just delivered up close.

If you have (or ever had) a personal trainer, have you asked them to explain:

  • Why they've chosen certain exercises?

  • Why they're in the order they're in?

  • What the logic is behind the number of sets and reps they're having you complete

  • How they adjust your program based either limitations and/or progress

  • How your program is different than their other clients' based on your personal goals?

If the responses to these questions is a blank stare or incoherent stammering, you're not paying for a personalized program.

You're paying for someone to stand close to you and count.

Hopefully correctly (hint: none of us count correctly).

2. You Hired a Coach, But You're Paying for a Friend

Spend a few hours a week one-on-one with someone and a friendship naturally forms.

Already there's a high level of trust because of the vulnerability required to ask for help with something as personal as health and fitness.

Very quickly you end up learning A LOT about each other.

Inside jokes develop.

Things you only vent or talk about with your best friends end up being shared with your personal trainer first.

In many cases the friendship spills outside of the gym to social settings: holiday parties, kids' graduations, weddings, etc.

It sounds nice, but it often wrecks the coaching relationship.

Their advice starts to feel optional.

They stop holding you accountable to the standards that will get you to your goals because their support has turned into sympathy and they don't want things to get awkward.

Before long, you're paying an hourly rate for a friend who "understands" while you sit on the same plateau.

3. Higher Price Does NOT Mean Higher Quality

Industry estimates report that 80% of personal trainers leave the industry within 2 years of starting.

Low pay and irregular hours leading to burnout is cited as the most common reason for the high turnover.

It is reasonable to assume of most products and services that the higher the price, the higher the quality.

That certainly can be true in the fitness industry. But it certainly should not be the expectation.

With one-on-one training, you're more purchasing a slice of someone's time, than you are a personalized program.

A coach only has so many hours in a day.

If they plan to stay in this industry, they must charge enough to:

  • Pay their bills

  • Support a family

  • Plan for their security/future

  • And have some type of quality of life outside of work

And, unless they're truly self-employed, they have to give a cut of their rate to the company/owner they work for.

Their hourly rate reflects the economics of the job more than it does the quality of the coaching or the programming.

And the trainers who charge less?

They are in the 80% that burn out and leave quickly, leaving you to look for a new coach.

The bottom line...

If you're looking to make serious strides toward your health and fitness goals you need to find something that offers:

  • Individualized programming tailored to your fitness level, skill level, and injury history.

  • Expert coaches that can make adjustments in real time based on your progress, limitations, or any other new information.

  • And a community that enforces real accountability.

...at a price that allows you to be consistent for the long-haul.
